What are the drivers of Chinese foreign policy in South Asia? What are its central narratives and themes? This presentation argues that while a traditional developing country identification with South Asia continues, Chinese approaches have also changed to reflect its growing economic and political heft in international relations. However, instead of bringing about greater generosity and flexibility in its ties with the smaller, weaker countries of South Asia and despite such ostensibly development-oriented and Global South-sensitive plans as the BRI, China has become overbearing in its attitudes and dogmatic in its worldview even as it exercises a great deal of agility in policy implementation.
